SYNOPSIS:
West Side Story is a musical set in 1950s New York City that follows the rivalry between two teenage street gangs: the Sharks (of Puerto Rican descent) and the Jets (of Polish-American descent). The conflict is heightened when Tony, a former Jet, falls in love with Maria, the younger sister of the Shark’s leader, Bernardo.

The two young lovers try to find a way to be together despite the animosity between their respective groups. Still, tragedy ultimately strikes, leading to a violent confrontation and multiple deaths. With its memorable music and powerful themes, “West Side Story” has been a staple of American musical theater for decades and continues to captivate audiences with its timeless story.

Evy Ortiz is very excited to sing for you this evening! Hailed for her “crystalline high notes” and “pristine, clear, gorgeous vocals,” she has built a crossover career in concert work, theatre, and television. She toured throughout the USA as Maria in the National Broadway Tour of West Side Story and debuted that production in Canada and Japan.

The Boston Globe reviewed her performance as “A genuinely captivating Maria who glows in every scene she’s in…It is the radiant Ortiz whose all-or-nothing urgency carries this West Side Story to its highest points.” She also played a role in many regional productions, including at the Lexington Opera House, The Maltz Jupiter Theatre, The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, and the North Shore Music Theatre. Other stage roles include (Luisa) The Fantasticks (Off-Broadway, dir. Tom Jones), (Philia) A Funny Thing…Forum, (Honey) Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and (Masha)The Seagull. She recently made her network TV debut in the recurring guest star role of Rosaria Santos in Law and Order: Organized Crime (NBC).

In addition to her theatre and television work, she has appeared as a featured soloist in numerous concerts, including Music City Christmas with the Grammy Award-winning Nashville Symphony, INSIDE BROADWAY: Broadway at the Movies, INSIDE BROADWAY: Leonard Bernstein Centennial, Music Man in Concert with Orchestra Kentucky, The West Point Holiday Show and West Side Story in Concert with the Norwalk Orchestra. She is a native New Yorker who studied classical singing for many years and trained as a lyric coloratura. BA degree in Theatre Arts (Pace University), MM in Vocal Performance (NYU).

Recognized for his “prodigious acting abilities” and a voice that has been acclaimed as “masterful, passionate and soaringly beautiful,” Bronson Norris Murphy is best known for premiering the role of The Phantom in the first North American production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies: The Phantom Returns.

Other notable performances include Raoul in the long-running production of The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, the world premiere of UNMASKED: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber at Paper Mill Playhouse, the 2019 New York City Center revival of Evita, the 30th Anniversary National Tour of CATS as Gus, Growltiger and Bustopher Jones and multiple US productions of West Side Story as Tony.

Other credits include New York City developmental productions of Faustus, the Musical (MTM’s Best Actor Award), I Hate Holmes, Joan of Arc, Catch the Wind, Alan Menken & Tim Rice’s King David, and Maybe One Day: A Fable for the York Theatre. His work in regional theatres includes Goodspeed Opera House, Paper Mill Playhouse, New York City Center, North Shore Music Theatre, White Plains Performing Arts Center, Theatre By The Sea, John W. Engeman Theatre, The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, West Virginia Public Theatre and two seasons as Stephen Foster in The Stephen Foster Story in the US and Japan.

Concert work includes I Am Harvey Milk at The Avery Fisher Hall, Music City Christmas with The Nashville Symphony, West Side Story in Concert with Norwalk Symphony, The Music Man in Concert with Orchestra Kentucky, The Ocean City Pops’ Tribute to the American Songbook and as a soloist for Bach’s Cantata No. 140, Ramirez’s Misa Criolla, Saint-Saens’ Christmas Oratorio, Vivaldi’s Magnificat, Dubois’ Seven Last Words of Christ as well as evenings of Broadway music with the symphonies of Milwaukee, Louisville, Chicago, Ft. Worth, Rochester, Detroit, Buffalo, and many others.

In addition to his work onstage, Bronson is an advocate for music literacy, maintaining regular classroom hours as an active voice and acting teacher in New York while hosting workshops on vocal production, song interpretation, music theory, and musical theatre audition techniques at New York University, The New York Film Academy, The Joffrey School of Ballet, Broadway Classroom and The Institute for American Musical Theatre. Bronson is the Associate Artistic Director for “Kentucky’s Official Outdoor Musical,” The Stephen Foster Story, now in its 63rd season.
